KThis is to expand upon my comments for your 1987 Picks & Pits Contest. My H
Ffavorite product of the year has to be the software that allows me to M
Kpartition my Checkmate MultiRam RGB 1 mega byte memory board. Its easy to O
Msetup on either 5 1/4 or 3 1/2 disk, and the programs that copies to the RAM O
Mdisk is one of the best and fastest that I have seen, even including Copy II O
MPlus (my favorite Utility program) and faster and easier to use than similar L
Jsoftware supplied by Applied Engineering. I know first hand because I've L
Jbeen using Checkmate software for over two years now, but, also because I P
Nsetup RAM disk configurations for two of my clients using Applied Engineering H
FMemory boards and software. In addition to the RAM disk partitioning N
Lsoftware, Checkmate offers /AUTORAM which contains the above software and a O
Mprogram that will backup or restore all of the data or applications programs P
Nin a RAM disk very quickly. For instance, I can load AppleWorks, MultiScribe O
Mand the Pinpoint Document Checker (almost 512k) into a RAM disk in about two H
Fminutes. This leaves over 283k for the AppleWorks desktop. And with P
NAutoWorks from Software Touch, I have a very fast operating system. /AUTORAM P
Nalso contains a Program Selector called SQUIRT which excellent. This program O
Mwas placed on the AppleWorld87 Public Domain as Share Ware and recently sent #
to all of the Apple Users Groups.
FMy favorite AppleWorks add-on, then, is apparently also the Checkmate N
Lsoftware, which does far more for me than merely expand AppleWorks. But, I P
Nwould not be happy if suddenly I no longer had the AutoWorks program. When I O
Muse a small Apple (128k), AppleWorks seems to drag along, and at least I can P
Nstill use AutoWorks. By the time you read this, it should be well known that N
LAlan Bird (AutoWorks) and Mark Simonson (FontWorks) have returned to Beagle M
KBros. Actually, Mark Simonson is the new owner of Beagle Bros. They will L
Jcontinue to support all of The Software Touch programs, according to what !
they told me on June 3, 1987.
NHardware peripheral: For me that could only be the MultiRam RGB memory board 7
from Checkmate. This way I can make the next choice:
JHardware Expansion Card: The brand new MultiRam Plus with External Power M
KModule (EPM) which allows me to load AppleWorks into a 512k partition that P
Nhas continuous power separate from the Apple power supply, thereby conserving J
Henergy from that power source. The programs in this part of the Memory O
Mexpansion card are always available upon power up, simply by booting the RAM
disk software.
NWithout doubt, then, my favorite Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Database is L
JAppleWorks. Yes, I have MultiScribe, which is superior to Print Shop for P
Nmaking flyers and signs. This is not, however, a very good wordprocessor. I N
Lhave SuperCalc3a which is very good, and can graph a spreadsheet, but it is M
Kdifficult to learn, and when I timed recalculations of spreadsheets loaded M
Kinto SuperCalc3a from AppleWorks, I found that AppleWorks recalculated the F
Dsame spreadsheet in the same amount of time. These were very large L
Jspreadsheets, requiring about 45-50 seconds to recalculate. I have tried N
LAppleWriter and FrEdWriter and several database and spreadsheet programs in G
Ethe Public Domain, and I tried to learn PFS, which I found very user K
Iunfriendly. In fact, every time I see a new productivity product that I O
Mthink I could use, I wait a few days and find that when I put my mind to it,
AppleWorks will do the job.
KTo sum up, one category missing is favorite Apple Journal: I subscribe to M
KA+, NIBBLE, InCider, and The Main Menu. InCider is far superior to all of J
Hthe others in Apple coverage. I failed to mention The AppleWorks Users J
Group, which I consider a magazine on disk. Its my almost first choice.
Thanks for a great job of covering the Apple II computer.
